Domino's workers fired over compensation disputes get jobs back

Many Maryland workers would complain that they are underpaid. Some may go as far as file complaints but then face retaliatory termination. That was what happened to 25 workers for the pizza franchise Domino's after they complained about their wages.

The compensation disputes caused the workers to get fired. However, that is illegal in New York, so the state's attorney general stepped in. Domino's agreed to rehire the fired employees.

Domino's has been under investigation since October to see if any state or federal laws have been violated. Although most of the employees work in the kitchen, they feel as through they are tipped employees, since their wages are so low. It's acceptable for a company to pay less than minimum wage as long as employees are receiving enough tips to make up the difference. The problem was that these kitchen workers received very little in tips.

If workers make good-faith complaints about their wages against their employers, then they cannot face retaliation. Domino's is still under investigation to determine if the franchise's wage policies are out of compliance with state and federal laws. In the meantime, the employees were back to work by Dec. 15 and are protected against any future forms of retaliation.

Wage disputes are common in this country. Although there are minimum wage and overtime laws, many companies try to take advantage of employees and pay them as little as possible. Fortunately, there are laws that prevent this from happening so that employees are properly compensated for the work they perform. Those who have wage issues should discuss them with their employer. If nothing is done, then a lawsuit may be the next step.
