Is there a reason not to file for child custody?

It is not uncommon for parents to have a lot of questions regarding child custody arrangements. While many of those generally have to deal with what type child custody plan works best for the entire family, there are some parents in Maryland who may wonder if legally filing for custody is really in their best interests. This is not to say that these parents want nothing to do with their children, but that they would rather not go to court.

So, is there really a reason not to file for legal custody of one's children? This is, of course, a very personal decision. Some parents may be able to negotiate and stick to parenting plans without needing court orders. For others, this type of arrangement may ultimately fail to work out as planned.

Filing for custody in court can grant parents certain rights. This includes the right to having designated time with one's children. It can also give one or both parents the right to make important decisions for their children, including how to handle medical needs and other issues with which parents may fail to agree. Figuring out a child custody arrangement that works best can take time, and there are situations where the court may have to make the final decisions when parents cannot come to mutual understandings.

There is no doubt that child custody can be a topic that sparks a lot of contention between parents. For these individuals, obtaining a legal custody order may be in their best interests as this may ensure they are granted the rights to their children that they desire. Regardless of whether parents in Maryland choose to forgo the legal process and design custody arrangements on their own or request custody through the court system, assistance is available to help parents come to terms each feels is acceptable and serves the best interests of their children.
