Glass technician sues Safelite for disability discrimination

Every person in Maryland and the rest of the country has the right to work despite having physical disabilities. Employers are legally bounded by anti-discrimination laws that prohibit the firing of qualified individuals basely solely on disability. However, glass repair company Safelite AutoGlass allegedly terminated an employee simply because he had three fingers amputated from one of his hands and could not fit into the company's gloves.

The North Carolina man was employed with Safelite for a period of one month -- from May to June 2013. On the man's first day of work, the trainer handed out uniforms, gloves and aprons to him and the other trainees. He told the trainer that the glove would not fit his left hand due to the amputation, but nothing was done to remedy the situation. The man even offered to wear his own gloves, which fit him, but the company would not approve the gloves.

The man could not wear the company-approved gloves because he was afraid of getting them caught on something due to the large gap caused by his three missing fingers. He was even demerited for refusing to do so, getting points deducted from his weekly review cards. Despite this, he passed his certification test.

The next day, the man was repairing a windshield when he accidentally got glue on the vehicle's paint. He was able to remove it. However, the man was deemed unfit for the job and fired the next day. He is now suing Safelite for disability discrimination.

Although windshield repair requires extreme skill, it seems as though the man was able to do his job despite his disability. All he was asking for was a pair of gloves that would fit him, and the company allegedly decided to ignore him until it could find a reason to terminate his employment.
